Privacy Policy
Animus: Dream Journal — made by Hunter Cole Finley — Effective September 15, 2026
Animus is a dream journaling and interpretation app made by Hunter Cole Finley, an independent developer. We take your privacy seriously, especially given the personal nature of dream content. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
Information We Collect
Account Information. When you create an account, we collect your email address and a password (which is hashed and never stored in plain text).
Dream Journal Entries. When you record a dream, we process the voice transcript (or your typed text) and store the polished journal text along with the AI-generated title, interpretation, mood, and artwork. Audio is never stored: your spoken words are transcribed on your device and the recording is discarded. Dreams live on your device first; they are backed up to our servers only if you sign in.
Usage Data. Animus keeps a few simple counts, such as how many dreams you have saved, on your device only. We do not use third-party analytics services.
How We Use Your Data
- Dream Interpretation. Your dream text is sent to OpenAI (the GPT-5.6 model) to write a Jungian-style reading. So the reading can notice what recurs, the request may also carry short one-line summaries of your earlier dreams, your list of recurring people, places and symbols (how often, and roughly when), the optional notes you keep in About You on your phone, and, when you chose to add them, your own notes on the dream (what a figure means to you, what was on your mind the day before, how you felt). OpenAI does not use API data to train its models, and keeps API inputs and outputs for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring, then deletes them (their policy as of September 2026). We send every request with storage turned off, so your dream is not kept in any dashboard history. A finished reading is held on our server for up to 15 minutes, encrypted with a key only your phone has, so a dropped connection cannot lose it; then it is deleted. A reading is an interpretation, not a diagnosis. The reading may gently point at a decision you seem to be avoiding or an old hurt a dream seems to circle; it offers this as a possibility for you to weigh, never as a fact about your life, and if what you wrote shows real distress the app stops interpreting and points you to help instead.
- Before the reading. The moment you save a dream, its text is sent once to a small OpenAI model that returns only the names of the people in it, so the questions before the reading can ask about the right people by their full names. Same terms as the reading: not used to train, storage turned off.
- Image Generation. A short image prompt derived from your dream is sent to Google (Gemini) to paint your dream. The prompt does not include your full dream text and never names a real person. Animus uses Google's paid API tier, under which Google does not use what we send to improve its products and no Google reviewer reads it; the app is built to refuse any Google request that would not run on those terms.
- Optional: how you look, from one photo. If you choose "Describe me from a photo" in About You, that one photo is sent once to Google AI (Gemini) to write a short description of your appearance, and only that text comes back. We do not store the photo: the app deletes it right after, and our servers never write it anywhere. The description lives in About You on your device, where you can edit or erase it, and travels with painting requests so figures in your dream paintings can resemble you. This feature is offered only while the app uses the paid API tier, under which Google does not use the content to improve its products.
Third-Party Services
- Supabase — Cloud database and authentication. Stores all user data with row-level security (each user can only access their own data).
- OpenAI — Writes the reading of each dream, the season reading in Dream Journey, and the in-app "ask about this dream" conversation. Receives your dream text, the summaries and the recurring-figures list described above, your follow-up questions, and any notes you added. These travel with the request and are never stored on our servers; conversations are stored only on your device.
- Google AI (Gemini) — Painting from dream-derived prompts, and, if you choose it, the one-time description of how you look. Paid API tier.
What We Do Not Do
- We do not sell your personal data to third parties.
- We do not use third-party analytics, and we show no advertising.
- We do not share your dream content with other users.
- We do not use your data to train AI models. Third-party AI providers process your data according to their own API terms of service.
Data Security
All data is transmitted over TLS encryption. Authentication tokens are stored in your device's native secure storage (iOS Keychain or Android Keystore). Our database enforces row-level security, meaning your data is only accessible to your authenticated account.
Data Retention & Deletion
Your data is retained as long as your account is active. You may delete individual dream entries at any time. You can delete your entire account and all associated data directly in the app under Settings. Upon account deletion, all personal data, including dream entries and artwork, is permanently removed from our systems.
Children's Privacy
Animus is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the email below.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated through the app. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
